Abstract

An experimental study is conducted to illustrate the advantages of increasing the aperture size of strain transducers used to perform direct rate feedback (DRFB) control. Twelve individual piezoceramic patches are installed to form a contiguous 3 × 4 array on a simply supported plate structure. The patches are grouped to form four different sized apertures consisting of 1, 4, 8, or 12 individual patches. The open loop results for all four cases show increased coupling into the low frequency modes of the plate as well as more uniform compliance in the frequency response function. As a result, much improved direct rate feedback control performance is achieved.
